Seven campsite habits that quietly destroy RV finishes, and what to do instead
A flawless finish is the calling card of a well-kept coach—just like a yacht at dock, it speaks before you ever say a word. We see the same mistakes at campgrounds that we see on the docks, and they quietly age your RV. Here are seven campsite habits that damage paint, FRP and gelcoat, and what to do instead.
Dry wiping dust and pollen: Micro-scratches add up fast. Instead, pre-rinse and use a pH-balanced rinseless washes such as Wade Maids Spit Shine with a plush microfiber.
Parking under sappy trees: Sap and tannins etch clearcoat and FRP finishes. Instead, choose open, shaded-by-awning or sapless tree sites and use a breathable cover when idle.
Using household cleaners: Harsh surfactants strip protection. Instead, limit soaps and wash with water and a little Dawn dish soap. Only use wax or a cleaning compound with wax, such as Wade Wax or Wade Maid RV Finish Rejuvenator with Wax to remove stubborn black streaks, scuffs or dark stains. This way instead of removing your wax and possibly damaging your finish, you clean and protect those stubborn areas all at once. All while not only cleaning but also protecting and making your finish easier to clean in the future
Letting sprinkler water dry on panels: Minerals spot and etch. Instead, move the coach or use a cover over the sprinkler head to prevent the spray from making contact with your RV.
Dragging power cords and hoses along the side: Grit-laden abrasion creates dull trails. Instead, deploy cord carefully to avoid contact with the sides of the RV, and wipe cords and connectors before stowing.
Skipping post-arrival wipe-downs: Road film bakes in under sun. Instead, a quick rinse or waterless wash, such as Wade Maid Spit Shine, on cool surfaces prevents baked on embedded grime.
Ignoring protection renewals: Waxes and ceramics don’t last forever. Their typical life is only 3 to 6 months! So, wax every 3 months to protect your exterior finishes or, if you have Duratain’s VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating, waxing once a year will double the life of your coating.
Treat your RV like a fine yacht: gentle chemistry, soft media, and consistent protection. Your finish will thank you!
