FAQ for full-timers: keeping fiberglass glossy without living inside a wash bay
RVers often ask us: how do you keep an RV finish glossy without turning your life into a permanent wash bay? The secret isn’t endless scrubbing—it’s smart, preventative care that works around your RVing schedule. Road grime and black streaks are relentless, but a few small habits preserve that RV finish and cut your maintenance time in half.
Quick, tips to make your life easier for the long run:
• Wash between trips with deionized water (when possible) and NO soap. This will lengthen your finishes life and prevent spotting.
• Use a wax to remove black streaks that don’t wash off with water. This way you’re not only removing stubborn dirt but you’re adding an extra layer of temporary protection to areas that take a beating, making your next wash that much easier!
• Dry with a towel or chamois. This helps clean up any areas missed during your wash and prevents any water markings on windows and finishes.
• Use a quality bug remover such as Wade Maid Bug & Animal Remover on your front cap when necessary. These formulas will not remove waxes like soaps do, only bugs…
• Block the sun: UV is the number one finish-killer. If you do not have Duratain Protective Coatings, wax your RV quarterly and use covers or sunshades for exposed areas when stationary.
• Wash with soap sparingly: by its very nature soap removes grease; wax is made up from blends of petroleum (grease) and carnaubas. One washing with soap will remove most if not all your protective layer of wax.
So, with the right protection and following some of these washing tips you can easily avoid the vicious cycle of washing and waxing. Ultimately shortening the life of your RV’s glossy finish.
