Five myths about Duratain’s VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating on RVs and the overlooked reason why it “fails” early
Duratain coatings transform an RV’s finish, but there’s a lot of confusion about what it does—and why it may seem to “fail” early. Here are five myths we hear most often, and what actually matters if you want long-term protection.
Five myths, debunked:
• Myth 1: Duratain’s VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating makes your RV scratch-proof. Reality: It adds hardness and slickness, but it won’t stop abrasion from brushes, grit, or improper washing.
• Myth 2: Duratain’s VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating needs to be re-installed every year. Reality: Over-application can trap solvents, build up and create patchy performance; picture a lifeguard with white zinc on his nose. He is protected but looks silly. VC-1 is designed to keep protecting for 5 years or longer without reapplication.
• Myth 3: Duratain’s VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating replaces routine maintenance. Reality: It reduces effort, not the need for proper washing, and water spot control.
• Myth 4: Any surface can be coated. Reality: Roofs, windows, wheels, and moldings can not be coated.
• Myth 5: If water beads stop, the Duratain’s VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating is gone. Reality: Traffic film and minerals can mask hydrophobics. Beading does not = protection.
The most overlooked reason coatings “fail” early: contaminated surfaces and hard water spotting. Road film, diesel soot, and mineral deposits layer over the coating, choking hydrophobics and dulling gloss. The coating is still there—it’s just buried.
Care checklist to keep your Duratain VC-1 Exterior Protective Coating performing:
• Wash every time your finish is heavily dirty and before storing.
• Avoid Wash and Waxes as they are loaded with silicone that will build up and attract dirt.
• Rinse with filtered or deionized water or hand dry to prevent spotting.
• Perform an annual decon wash (iron remover/scale remover) to unclog the coating.
• Park under cover when possible; use a high-quality RV cover for extended storage.
